True fact: the internet is an amazing place. A brilliant friend of mine, Chris Croke used to say that his most productive hours were between 2am and 4am because he'd read everything he was interested in online and nothing new had yet been posted.
I try hard (not always successfully) to stay away from breaking news, even (perhaps especially) during a crisis. I think you get very little from the minute-by-minute updates on unfolding events – they mostly just remind you that no-one knows anything.
My principles for online media consumption are:
- When no-one knows anything yet and there’s nothing to be done, less information is better.
- When you want to make up your mind about something, more information is better.
- Once your mind is made up, then you should consume information that might change your mind.
In Part 2, I list my favourite online news sources, and the rough order in which I read them. Read Part 2 right here!
